Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga - A Dynamic Aerobic Exercise

Though breathing is usually an integral part of all yoga disciplines, Ashtanga vinyasa yoga takes it a step further and integrates it into all the poses performed during the exercise. The time taken between one step of the posture and the next is dictated completely by time taken to inhale and exhale. In Ashtanga vinyasa yoga, more attention is paid to the breathing and not the alignment of the body. There are usually four parts to any exercise sequence - the opening sequence, a main pose, a back-bending or inverted posture and a finishing sequence. The degree of difficulty is increased as you become more experienced.

Ashtanga Yoga Poses - Breathing Your Way Through

Poses in any yoga discipline are structured, beginning with the easiest stretching exercises and moving on to the more difficult poses that require greater strength, stamina and flexibility. The practice is started with the 12 postures of sun salutation. The practice of Ashtanga yoga poses usually end with a resting pose known as the corpse pose. Any newcomers to this discipline first start with the primary series and move on to the more difficult poses in the intermediate and the advanced series of poses. The goal of these Asthanga yoga poses is to bring internal focus and maintain the inner peace and balance.
