A business tycoon, a notable philanthropist and the founder of Microsoft who revolutionized the computer industry, Bill gates is unarguably the best living entrepreneur and was the number one on Forbes list of the World’s richest people, consecutively from 1995 to 2007 and in 2009.

Born to a well-off multiracial family, on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington, to an Attorney father and a School teacher mother, Bill Gates was exceptionally intelligent from his childhood. He wrote his first computer program at the age of thirteen. Being friends with Paul Allen (the co-founder of Microsoft), the duo developed the program, Traf-O-Data in 1972, to count traffic in Seattle.Scoring 1590 out of 1600 for Harvard admission test, Gates joined Harvard in 1973. Obsessed with computers, he left his study schedules behind and conjoined with Paul Allen in designing softwares, which, later, motivated them into starting their own computer software firm. Upon demonstrating an Altair emulator to MITS president Ed Roberts, Gates and Allen were designated to develop Altair BASIC. They named their partnership Micro-Soft, with their office at Albuquerque.On November 26, 1976, the name was registered as Microsoft, and Gates left Harvard. For the first five years, he wrote, reviewed and edited codes to ensure perfection of Microsoft products and later became its President and Chairman in 1981. Microsoft’s tie up with IBM made it a huge commercial success, developing MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows versions licensed to IBM, ensuring protection from software piracy, despite severe criticisms.

In 1994, Bill Gates and his wife Melinda Gates founded the Gates Foundation, formerly the Bill Gates foundation, intending at undertaking philanthropic endeavors in the fields of education and health and to uplift the poor classes. Grossing a capital of US$33.5 billion as on December 31, 2009, the Bill Gates foundation employs amazing leadership ventures to undertake the strategies and successfully implement them. Focusing around the world to eradicate the barriers obstructing educational and health systems, and to implement new techniques to help cultivate more food, the foundation also provides various scholarships to fund the studies of low income students and high achieving minorities.

Bill and Melinda Gates

Bill Gates married Melinda French on January 1, 1994. They have three children and live in a mansion in Medina overlooking Lake Washington. Melinda Gates co-chairs Bill Gates in the Gates foundation and formerly managed a few units of Microsoft. The duo has been collectively named the Persons of the Year by the Time Magazine in 2005, in recognition of their humanitarian services.
