He has Dutch, Irish and Italian ancestry and was raised in the Roman Catholic faith. Very early in his life, he picked up his guitar and was often remembered as the ‘loner who liked to strum his guitar’. He got his first guitar at the age of 13 and since then he has been playing fervently. At the age of 23, he signed his first record deal with Columbia Records. After a brief hiatus, he released Tunnel of Love in 1987 and followed it with Human Touch 5 years later. In the same year, he also released Lucky Town. The Ghost of Tom Joad came in 1995 and Tracks in 1998. In 2002, he released another album titled ‘The Rising’ and followed it up with Devils and Dust, We Shall Overcome - The Seeger Sessions, Magic, Working on a Dream and The Promise in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 respectively.
