Diet for Thyroid - for Hyperthyroidism Patients
Normal functioning of thyroid gland is important for a person’s health. Therefore apart from taking the medicines, diet for thyroid
patients also helps in keeping thyroid level under control. People suffer from hyperthyroidism when the thyroid gland becomes overactive and increases body's metabolic rate. Hyperthyroidism patients should ensure that they eat a variety of nutrients like vitamins, proteins, calcium, and minerals and also intake adequate calories to supplement higher metabolic rate. Therefore, diet for thyroid patients can include foods like, meat, poultry, cereals and fresh fruits and vegetables. Vegetables like broccoli, kale, and cauliflower are known to be good for hyperthyroidism. However, hyperthyroidism patients should avoid intake of iodine rich foods like iodized salt, seafood, eggs, etc which increase thyroid levels in the body.
Underactive Thyroid Diet - for Controlling Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid makes body’s metabolism slower than normal. An underactive thyroid diet
plan ensures that the body gets those nutrients that help in improving the body’s metabolic rate. Hypothyroidism patients should eat a lot of whole grains and cereals and fresh fruits and vegetables. However, fruits and vegetables like strawberries, peaches, pears, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, turnip and spinach should be avoided as they have goitrogenic effect which is harmful for hypothyroid patients. Underactive thyroid diet should include high iodine content food like iodized salt, eggs, seafood and dairy products, and nutrients like Vitamin E and zinc, which are known to improve thyroid functioning.
Thyroid Weight - Keeping Under Control
For people suffering from thyroid weight gain or weight loss is a common symptom. In case of hyperthyroidism, when the body’s metabolic rate increases, the body burns calories at higher rate than normal; depending on the severity of the condition, weight loss occurs. However, since the weight loss is unnatural, many patients find that once they start getting treatment for hyperthyroidism, they gain weight. In case of hypothyroidism, the body’s metabolic rate becomes much slower than normal and hence weight gain occurs. Some weight loss may occur when the treatment starts but patients with hypothyroidism should be careful with what they eat and exercise regularly to keep unwanted weight gain away.
