Dry Socket Symptoms – Identify on Time for Effective Treatment

Dry socket or alveolar osteitis is a common condition that occurs after the extraction of a tooth. This condition occurs due to the failure of formation of blood clots in the socket or the dislocation of formed blood clots from the socket.

Dry Socket Symptoms - Awful and Painful

A person having the condition of dry socket will exhibit many evident signs and symptoms of the disease. Of the dry socket symptoms, the most important one is a severe pain which radiates from the site of tooth extraction to the ears. This pain will start after 2 to 5 days after the tooth extraction. Due to the action of microbes in the open socket, a person having a dry socket will experience an unpleasant taste in the mouth and will also have the condition of bad breath. He will also have difficulty in eating and will experience a loss of appetite. The lymph nodes present in the neck will appear swollen and tender. The tooth socket will be empty and the bones and nerves in the open socket will be visible. Some other dry socket symptoms include discomfort in the eyes, fever and redness and inflammation of the gums. The risk of having a dry socket will be high following the extraction of the wisdom teeth. Smoking, infection of the teeth and gums and lack of proper post operative care also increases the chance of occurrence of a dry socket.

Dry Socket Treatment - Reduces Pain And Discomfort

The main aim of a dry socket treatment will be to reduce the symptom of pain. Before starting the treatment, the doctor will do a X-ray and routine examination to confirm the condition. In one method of dry socket treatment, the empty socket is cleaned in order to get rid of the food particles and debris, and is then packed with a piece of gauze containing a medicated paste. The medicated paste will be a mix of painkillers and antimicrobial medications. The dressings will have to be changed depending on the severity of the pain. Pain relieving drugs are also prescribed sometimes in order to alleviate the symptoms.

Dry Socket Home Remedies - Effective Cures

In order to get relief from the painful symptoms of dry socket, you can also follow some tried and tested dry socket home remedies. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after having food in order to avoid accumulation of debris in the socket. Application of a natural antiseptic like diluted clove oil on the socket will help in relieving the pain. Rinsing of mouth with warm salt water many times will also help in dealing with the condition of dry socket. You can also place an icepack outside of the jaw near the sockets to reduce the pain and inflammation.
