According to a survey completed in April of 2010 by, the median hourly wage of a flight attendant is $12.77 to $18.23. However, the BLS shows that a beginning flight attendant salary can vary between carriers. Typically, all new flight attendants at a particular airline are paid the same salary, regardless of past experience with another carrier. As experience is gained, the flight attendant salary increases. Someone with as many as 14 years experience may earn up to $41.00 per hour. As a steward, you are only paid for in-flight time so that time that you are waiting at the airport to board the plane is unpaid. There are some perks with the job as well. Many airlines will pay bonuses for those who work holidays, and typically flight attendants receive free or discounted flights from their airline. There are also medical benefits, life insurance, paid vacations and stock options.

Flight Attendant Training - Learn From the Pros

Flight attendants must be certified by the FAA. The length of flight attendant training can range from 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the training center you attend. A trainee will learn emergency procedures such as evacuation techniques, operating equipment, first aid and surviving in water. Flight attendant training also includes how to deal with disruptive passengers and hijacking situations. Some airlines even do in-flight training so you can get a first-hand look at what you’ll be doing on the job.

Flight Attendant School - Preparations for Take Off

You can choose to attend a flight attendant school before applying for a job with an airline. This will give you an advantage of the competition. Flight Attendant Express is one such school.
