When James was six years old his family moved to Santa Monica, California. After his mother’s death in 1940, James was sent to Fairmont, Indiana, where he was raised by his aunt and uncle. After high school, James moved to Los Angeles to study theatre at the University of California.After a few commercials and small parts in Hollywood movies, James moved to New York. His performances caught the eye of film director Elia Kazan who gave his first major acting role as Cal Trask in ‘East of Eden’.
