Famous as the “first person to set foot on the moon”, Neil Armstrong did two space missions, of which the second was the most remarkable for mankind. He landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, saying, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

Neil Armstrong Biography - A Life Full of Awards and Recognitions

Born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5, 1930, Neil Armstrong is of multiracial descent, and was one of the recognized members of the Boy Scouts of America, winning the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award and Silver Buffalo Award. With a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Neil Armstrong was accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and holds honorary doctorates from various universities.His dreams of becoming an astronaut saw hopes when he was selected for the U.S. Air Force program, Man In Space Soonest. Later he was selected for the pilot consultant group for the X-20 Dyna-Soar. He later applied for the astronaut application program from NASA, and was selected to the NASA Astronaut Corps. His first mission was in Gemini 8, which took off in September 20, 1965, with Armstrong as Command Pilot.Neil Armstrong received many awards and recognitions, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

First Moon Landing - A Giant Leap for Mankind

Apollo 11, a space flight carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969. Neil Armstrong was the Commander of the mission. The Lunar module vehicle named Eagle, took the astronauts from the Apollo 11 to the surface of the moon. Neil Armstrong did the first moon landing by mankind, on July 20, 1969, and they left and American flag on the moon. The command module of the space flight, Columbia took back the astronauts to the earth on July 24, 1969. The historic moment of the first moon landing was broadcast on the television watched by over 600 million people.
