Born around 1595 near Virginia, Pocahontas was the Native American princess and the daughter of chief Powhatan. Her fame is based on helping the English settlers in the Jamestown Colony. She is also famous for her marriage to an Englishman John Rolfe, a marriage which is regarded as the first mixed marriage in the U.S. The Pocahontas biography
is told of how she saved the life of John Smith and how the two developed a friendship. She supported the colonists and warned them of an upcoming attack. After being captured by Sir Samuel Argall, Pocahontas was used as a bargaining chip in an effort to necessitate the release of English prisoners. Now married, Pocahontas went to England in 1616, where she was viewed as an example of how English ways could be adopted by the Native Americans.
