Screen Printing Process – Know the Techniques of the Trade

The popularity of screen printing arises from the fact it can be easily adapted for use on paper, nylon, fabrics, plastics, metals and paperboard. This process of printing can be employed for making posters, cards, signage, decals, textile designs and even electronic circuit boards.

Screen Printing Process - the Basic Technology Involved

The basic technology involved in the screen printing process is quite simple which can be easily modified to suit various requirements. The primary elements that are required are the image carrier, the squeegee and the printing ink. A porous fabric or metallic mesh is stretched over a frame with adequate tension and the image to be printed is produced on it either manually or by photochemical methods. Using the squeegee the ink is then made to pass through this mesh on to the substrate where the printing is done as per the image on the mesh. The thickness of the threads and the density of the mesh control the amount of printing ink that passes through thereby giving the various shades. Drying of the substrate is the final step in the screen printing process.

Screen Printing Press - for Mass Production

There are several designs of screen printing press which are specialized for different types of printing work, where the need is to efficiently produce large number of prints. Mass production of fabrics, cards, brochures, posters and emblems can be easily accomplished by the use of the press, which drastically reduces the printing time and effort. Each type of printing requires a special type of screen printing press depending on the material of the substrate and the size of the print required. These presses are easy to operate and can be handled by only a couple of workers to accurately mass reproduce even the most intricate designs on different materials.

Automatic Screen Printing - Latest Trends

The latest developments in automatic printing technology has created innovations, which can easily handle the most difficult materials like plastic and the colors like golden to create complex items such as the credit cards. Most automatic screen printing machines are controlled by smart computers for feeding and analysis of the designs and thereafter for the control of ink and printing time. The substrate materials like plastic, metals, silk fabric and nylon strips can be directly fed into such machines automatically to ensure a steady flow of printing action. The color, shade and resolution of the prints are varied through computer applications to produce amazingly accurate reproductions of extremely high quality.
