Businessman and investor, Warren Edward Buffett was born on 30 August 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, Howard, served as U.S. Congressman and also worked as a stockbroker and his mother Leila was a homemaker. Warren was born second in a family of three children and he was the only boy. In 1956 he attained his advanced degree at Columbia University and shortly afterwards he formed the firm Buffett Partnership. Warren Buffett Foundation - Philanthropic Ways
Later in his life Buffett formed a charitable organization called the Buffett Foundation. He uses this foundation as a tool of managing his charitable giving. The Warren Buffett foundation
gives awards to outstanding individuals, general support and scholarships to deserving students, and it is the major charitable organization in the U.S.A, disbursing over US$ 12 Million every year. It was renamed Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation after Warren`s wife, Susan Buffett died in 2004. In 2008, the assets of the Warren Buffett foundation were estimated at nearly US$ 4 Billion. However the foundation only awards scholarships to residents in Nebraska, and teaching awards are given to outstanding certified teachers in the Omaha public school system, selected by community members.
The Snowball Warren Buffett - a Biography
A biography about Buffett, titled “The Snowball - Warren Buffett and the Business of Life”, was published in 2008. He had initially rejected several approaches by biographers, publishers and journalists who wanted him to give an account of his life. However, Buffett later approached Alice Schroeder to be the writer of his biography. For the previous six years, Alice was the only Wall Street analyst that Buffett would speak to, and that’s why he asked her to write his biography. She spent over 2,000 hours doing background research on the life of Buffett before writing the book. In the Snowball Warren Buffett biography, Schroeder explains how Buffett rose to the top in terms of wealth, and all the challenges that he faced along the way. The first edition of the book quickly became very popular, such that several magazines and newspapers named it the book of the year.
